of scientists, physicians and researchers. Since then Solvay
has led the way on many medical and scientific fronts. It
has developed an extensive portfolio of medications that
have improved the quality of life for people around the
world. Solvay Pharma Inc. was established in Canada in 1991.
It has focused on investigating and developing medicines in
therapeutic areas such as cardiology, gastroenterology,
central nervous system men's health, influenza and
arthritis. In 2000, Estratest was the 199th top- selling
prescription drug in the United States with sales of $110

Estratest for Women
While Estrogen remains the principle sex hormone in women,
researchers have found that both the ovaries and the adrenal
gland secrete minute amounts of testosterone--about 20 times
less than the amount secreted by men. Even this minute
amount is at least in part responsible for female libido.
Solvay thus combined the two sex hormones in one pill called
Estratest. It has been on the market for more than 30 years
as an alternative to standard estrogen therapy. Besides
bringing about a decrease in hot flashes, commonly
associated with menopause, Estratest has been reported to
cause an increase in energy and sexual enjoyment. However,
one report shows that about 70 percent of women on estrogen
therapy alone discontinue use after one year because their
symptoms haven't been relieved or they don't like the side
effects. Continued use of the drug mostly depends on the
reduced dosage
