Estratest as Women Viagra
Estratest, a combination of oral estrogen and testosterone,
is only approved to treat estrogen-resistant hot flashes.
Still, doctors and patients have used it as an off-label
drug, i.e. used for a purpose other than what it is approved
for. This purpose in case of women is improving sexual
desire. Studies have shown that can perform the latter
function. Hence it has been called by some as Viagra for
Women. This coinage is basically a misleading one if we look
at Viagra and its function in Men.
Viagra and Men
Viagra, a Pfizert Inc. product, is an oral drug that
functions as a vasodilator i.e. it increases the flow of
blood to genitals when a man is excited for the sexual act.
Thus Viagra helps reach and maintain penile erection. It is
a drug for treating impotence in men. Viagra does not cause
the desire or excitement that precedes and results in
erection. In short, it is not an aphrodisiac.
Estratest and Women
The testosterone component of Estratest works to improve
female libido. While it cannot exactly be called Women
Viagra, it can serve as an appropriate therapy for
surgically menopausal women who, after surgery, notice hot
flashes and a decrease in sexual desire. The main drawback
is that the drug is a fixed dose of a combination of
estrogen and androgen. Women who may not need estrogen for
hot flashes may not want to use the product for obvious
reasons: the hormone may increase the risk of heart attack,
stroke, breast cancer, endometrial (vaginal) cancer, and
blood clots in the lungs or legs
